Should We Negotiate with Terrorists?      Part 1: Tuesday July 7, 2015

In 2011, Israel set 1,027 prisoners free in exchange for Gilad Shalit. The rise of ISIS and so many murders including James Foley, Steven Sotloff, raises a heart wrenching debate: Should we pay hefty ransoms and/or release dangerous criminals in exchange for the life and freedom of an innocent hostage?

To add to this discussion, on June 24, 2015, the president said that U.S. government officials can now communicate directly with terrorists and help families negotiate the release of hostages. This runs contrary to the over 200 year old US policy of not paying ransom and not negotiating with terrorists!

Can We Torture Detainees to Save Lives Part 2: Tuesday July 14, 2015:

The recent "Torture Report" (Dec. 9, 2014) alleges that the brutal interrogation techniques used by the CIA in the aftermath of 9/11 were ineffective. But if detainees would yield valuable information to save thousands of other lives—would they have been justified? The evils of terror must be combated yet human rights must also be protected. How do we balance these competing values?
